?What is compelling about the Project Air Pilot Initiative
Project Air’s Pilot Initiative will serve to both mitigate and prevent trauma, as well as to improve
health, physical fitness and psychological well-being. What trauma? The obdurate trauma of
HIV+ genocide rape survivors in Rwanda, and the more recent trauma of their sister sufferers in the
current conflict in Eastern Congo. For these women, worn down by injuries, illness, depression and
poverty, yoga is a boon. Why? Because it gives them back the sense that they still have untapped
reserves of life and health and youth in them—that they are not old and maimed and sick at all, but
still very much alive. In addition, for their largely HIV+ daughters, as well as for other girls orphaned
by AIDS or the conflicts, yoga is prophylactic. How? Because it builds strong bodies and muchneeded
confidence, which teaches girls, who tend to be sexualized too young and inhibited by
culture, illness and poverty from sports or recreation, to value themselves and their strengths. Yoga
is likewise a bonanza for the young and adolescent sons of traumatized women, as well as for other
boys living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. This is because it is not only fun, but also visually exciting
and physically challenging, which encourages participation and helps channel physical energy, improve
coordination, reaction time and memory. It also instills the values of focus, kindness and tolerance,
key aspects of the yoga training they receive. All these gains, combined with the nutritional and
potable water components of the Project Air Pilot Initiative, will yield high-impact health, fitness
and mental well-being benefits, as well as sustainable income-generating
opportunities, locally, regionally—and beyond.
